Great idea. How you gonna crush the bodies?

Zbuck, I am not sure, gonna try it this weekend, but I am thinking I will not crush them so severely, just sort of push the roof down, leaving the make and model of the cars some what recognizable. I remember, seeing cars being flattened this way, years ago at the local bone yard, with a large front end loader fitted with forks instead of a bucket.

I was thinking you could use a heat gun, flat board or metal plate and some weight. Not much weight maybe a pound. paint the body, add grille and bumpers. Then place the flat board on top of the model and the weight on top of that. Then start to heat it. as it gets hot and starts to settle you will be able to move the focus of the heat gun to the colder spots(ones not settling).doing it that way each crushed car would have some color and some of the details of the crushed car would still show. Just an idea I had.

Zbuck, I thought of the heat gun too but not about placing the weight on top and then heating. Great idea I will try it, if I can remember which neighbor borrowed my heat gun. I am also considering mating some body panels incorporating some cut up aluminum pop cans.tom

yes Gez, I did some heat gun experiments using Zbuck's advice. After overdoing one car I got the feel for it. I have four cars smashed using heat gun/lighter combo but they need to be painted. I also have a good start on the trailer. I will post some pics very soon. thanks ,tom

Looking forward to it, Tom.
Not many people building junk these days. Myself included.

Yea Gez, I have been junking cars or making them into dirt trackers for so long I don't know if I can do it straight anymore. I am going to try it when I build the tractor for this piece, I am a bit concerned, tom

here's a in progress pic. Each car is handled slightly different, using Zbucks heat gun idea incorporating a brick as weight. I slowly gained some confidence with the melting making each car a little flatter. After trying cutting the body first then heat gun/lighter body only, I tried heat gun before cutting just body, then heat gun, body, interior, wheel wells and frame unglued before cutting. taping the bottom of the body or taping the body to the frame was the trick. this way the cars would bend out sideways. a lighter was used to make adjustments and a lot of scraping with an exacto knife, using it like a plane, and sanding was done to sharpen the dents. then rust holes, Gez's baking soda trick, then painted and put together. sorry did not mean to write a book here. tom Attachments:

Not a book at all. I think it is great input. You have an awesome idea and I want to thank you for sharing it. Who knows I might build a "rustbucket" someday. I am following right along.
