Prostreet woody

I started this 'shiney' build, and thought I ought to post it here on rustbuckets also, seein as how I'm a moderator, eh?

A recent splurge at AK Collectibles - Monogram 30 Ford Woody and a Snaptite Z28 Camero .
I wanted the Camero because for $18, I could get all the pro street goodies!
Here's how nice the folks at AK are! They had the Camero listed at $18. When I called, he didn't have the Camero. He asked me to give him a day to locate one. When I called back, his wife told me he was across town checking with another dealer, and would call me back. About a half hour or so, I got a call. The other dealer had one, and AK would hold the price at $18 they had listed.


The Camero comes with an upper and lower chassis. I have used the woody floor plate as a template and trimming the sides a tad, got the upper portion with the tubs, fit into the woody body. I'll have to do something about a front clip, but I'll deal with that after I get the lower Camero plate with the suspension mated to the upper tubbed half.



I might have to channel the woody some to get it down. We'll see .
I'm kicking out the wheel wells a little. I don't like to see tires protruding past the body sides without a flange or something. That pill bottle is the exact circumference as the cut out. I really don't know exactly how I'm gonna work this . :confused:
I may have bobbed fenders on the rear and fenderless in front.


I found an new front clip from a 5 year old Craftsman truck that I have been raiding from. It reminds me kinda like a Fatman IFS kit.. We'll see about that also.
I'm really digging around in hoarded stuff. I have a Parts Pac Pontiac that I have had for several years. It just got 90% dechromed with Oven cleaner. :drunken:


I got to looking at the parts pack Pontiac 421 I was going to use, and thought, dang, that looks kinda small. I compared it with the Monogram engine that came in the. woody. Curses to Revell with their 1:25 crap !!!! I'm going with the Monogram engine. Can't have no dinky lil out of scale* engine in a prostreet !!

I need to fit the woody's cowl so I can build a front clip.
This caused a bit of carnage to the Camero's floor pieces.



Here's today's mockup of the frame front being scratchbashed for the woody.
I can assure you that may be rolling your eyes and groaning, that notching the bellhousing to fit between the frame rails is a standard in the manual of Imagineering.



Not much today. Dinky stuff. Setting up the intake. I had a nice magneto set up, drilled, painted, and with a mounting plate, but it wouldn't clear the intake. I got lucky and found another with a 45 ° angle in the engine salvage drawer.


Engine pretty much done. Front end just mocked on.
Going to use these headers. They're rough. The two halves don't line up real well, and I'll have to lenghten the pipes to get it out past the body. Might be a bit of a challenge.

Looks like I'll have to blacken the lower part of those nitreous bottles

This was a fun day. The woody ended up in a brake fluid bath.
Meanwhile, I worked on the exhaust pipes, and if I'm gonna use the cycle fenders, they had to go thru some weight training. Thinned the leading/trailing edges and shaved down the 2X4 struts.

I'm in the process of getting the front clip on the frame. I made some changes on the front of the frame to accomodate the radiator and shell.
Rigging up the steering system. Good thing I have the body handy for locating stuff, so I'm holding off trying paint it again.
One of my hangups, along with seeing alternators and generators just hanging off a belt, is a fat 3 scale inches or so of rim sticking out from the tire. I usually try to get those shaved down some.

I think I have the exhaust pipes dialed in, I had to make header plates for them. I can now try the body painting again.
I had sent a pic of my cobbled steering to Fotki yesterday morning. I think it went to China. Someone's gonna be dissapointed when they go for their vacation pictures. This was what was in MY Fotki in it's place.

As ever, great work! Monograms are 1/24 so always are larger than others' 1/25. I didn't like Mono's lack of detail in general (too many molded in parts and poor detail on most engine parts). Your work more than makes up for Monogram's shortcomings. The valve covers look like T-Bird. An odd thing about Model A Woody models, I've never seen any with chopped tops. Back to the model, I luv the modern front suspension. Good luck with however you decide to color the body, woodlike or paint...it will be interesting!

I think I may have seen one chopped, not sure. However, If I get my hands on another, I may give Igor permission to use the chainsaw. He'll love that !!!
I had some taller, chrome bling valve covers, but I liked these better.
As for Monogram detail, there was no waterpump or detailing for the front of the engine other than a bump and the fan felts.

With the body in paint, not much going on.
I don't know if they use these on carbourated engines, but they look cool.
So I managed to get out to the shop and install some flapnoids in the air scoop....Through that little slot on the bottom, I might add

The body is back from the cabinet shop and will be heading for paint.

Good news - bad news !
Candy paint turned out pretty good. Except for the header part over the windshield, didn't get enough paint on it.
Interior almost done, need to build a footer part for the pedals..
Bad news is that I can't use the exhaust that I fixed up. It was close to the tire to start, but when I got the cycle fenders mocked, they wouldn't clear. I want the cycle fenders, so I'll have to build something different for the exhaust. I don't have anything in the salvage that is suitable for a street machine, especially something that has the correct port spacing.

After a two week fight trying to cobble up some headers from salvage yard stuff, and ruining some solder and aluminum rod, I resorted to braided craft yarn. I just couldn't get all the angles right.



I built mounts for the lakes pipes from brass tubing and rod, and made heavier exhaust flanges which I lightly glued to the engine. Now that things are more solid, and not moving around on me, I used the craft cord. It has the stiffness of cooked spaghetti. I daubed super glue on the tips so I could trim them square with nail clippers. When I had them placed, I gave then a coat of super glue to stiffen them up.




Not too bad. I unglued the flanges and gave the chord another wash of super glue. They're solid. I'm not going to paint the chord part. Going to leave it looking like flexible exhaust pipe.
Now, I can start putting everything together.
